Early K5LA on Great Northwest Railway

Post by Mafarnz »

The Great Northwest Railway is a WATCO owned and operated line that runs from Lewiston Idaho to Ayer Washington along the Snake River. In Ayer there is interchange with UP and BNSF.

Recently the line was giver a pair of SD40-2's to operate their daily Ayer Turn run with. One of these units has a FANTASTIC sounding K5LA.
The engineer on this day is a good friend of mine who likes the K5LA, and he has been asking me to come record his train for a while. I had an opportunity to do so last week. I have not had a chance to look at this horn up close, but to my ear it sounds to be late 1980's or early 1990's, from the "good" era of K5's.

Besides the K5 I also enjoy the well maintained jointed rail.
