1970 Erie Lackawanna SU3L

Post by 12bridge »

I have been wanting a Leslie SU for a long, long time. I finally got some cash together and went on the hunt and got nowhere. I wound up buying a manifold with the thoughts of building one up, and literally the same week the opportunity arose to pick this up. Its an original Erie-Lackawanna 1970 date stamp, and was likely one from the Comet cab car fleet - although with the amount of grunge that was on it, I would not be surprised if it was on an engine at one point either.

This thing has some of the worst, porous castings I have ever seen on a Leslie. I sent Mike M. the heads to redo, and got them back last week. I opted to give it an EL inspired paint job. The yellow was an after thought since I could not get a crisp paint edge between the grey and maroon. I set it up with the EMD style reversal.

Included with it was a set of the NJT spring steel mount snow cones, which are apparently rare as all hell. I am going to use those on an RSU3P project using that manifold mentioned above.

Hoping this group gains more traction and helps push the hobby back to what it was. The FB group is just a dumpster fire.

Beautifully done; that color combination detail around the Leslie lettering looks particularly nice.

May I ask what type of paint and what colors you used? Color codes would work as well, also what was your method of painting the small details? Very beautiful restoration!!
