Modern foghorn powered by electric only?

Post by Flat Train »

I looked at my local foghorn at the end of a pier, and didn't see any air hose. looked somewhat like a siren. Are most foghorns electric now?

Nearly all of them are electric. Air powered diaphone fog signals or diaphragm fog signals are too costly to maintain. An all in one electric unit is cheaper to run. I have a set of AirChime KM85 and 110's from the Sisters Island lighthouse in BC. They were replaced with an electric fog signal.

Wish they were still air powered. Rumor has it that there is an a retired air powered fog horn on a power plant near where the new one is. Hopefully I can snap a few photos before the plant gets torn down.
